What is a shutter?

The shutter is the mechanism by which a camera controls the effective exposure time of a photographic film. It’s an important part of the camera. Its structure, form and function is an important factor to measure the level of the camera. Generally speaking, the wider the shutter speed range, the better. The low number of seconds is ideal for shooting moving objects, with one camera emphasizing that the shutter speed can be as fast as 1/16, 000 seconds, making it easy to catch a rapidly moving target.

But when you’re shooting a picture of heavy traffic at night, the shutter time has to be lengthened, and the silky flow of water that is common in photos has to be shot with a slower shutter speed.

So we’ll talk about what are rolling shutter and global shutter ?

What is Global Shutter (Total Shutter)?

By exposing the whole scene at the same time. All pixels collect light at the same time and expose at the same time. At the beginning of the exposure, the Sensor begins to collect light. At the end of the exposure, the light collecting circuit is cut off. The Sensor value is then read as a photo. CCD is the way Global Shutter works. All pixels exposed at the same time.

The advantage of global shuter is that all pixels are exposed at the same time. The disadvantage is that the exposure time is limited, and there is a mechanical limit of the minimum exposure time.

What is Rolling Shutter?

Unlike Global Shutter, it is implemented by the Sensor in the form of line-by-line exposure. At the beginning of the exposure, the Sensor scans line by line for exposure until all pixels are exposed. Of course, all the actions are done in a very short time. The exposure time of different pixels is different.

Rolling shutter can reach high frame rate. But when the exposure is improper or the object moves quickly, partial exposure, skew, wobble and other phenomena occur.

The advantage of rolling shutter exposure is a smaller exposure time. The disadvantage is that the image is exposed at different times line by line. If the image is moving, there will be obvious drag. Therefore, shutter exposure is not suitable for shooting moving objects.

In summary, applications with short exposure times (<500μs) and fast moving are suitable for Global shutter. When the exposure time is longer ( >500μs), rolling shutter can reduce noise and frame rate.
