CMOS image sensor sales could fall for the first time in a decade, hit by COVID-19
CMOS image sensor (CIS) sales have hit nine consecutive records in the past nine years. But according to IC Insights reported that the end by 2020, with sales of CMOS image sensors falling 4 percent, due to hit by COVID-19.

Sales of CMOS Image Sensor in the past 10 years
Spurred by applications such as smartphones. CMOS image sensors have been the fastest growing semiconductor industry in the past decade. According to the data, sales of CMOS image sensors quadrupled from 2010 to 2019, reaching $18.4 billion last year.

But due to the outbreak, sales of CMOS image sensors will fall to $17.8 billion in 2020, a negative growth rate, compared with 30% in 2019. But the report expects that figure to rebound to 15% by 2021, with sales of $20.4 billion.
In addition, sales of CMOS image sensors increased from $4.5 billion in 2010 to $18.4 billion in 2019, the report said. Composite increases the older rate (CAGR) of 16.9%, much better than other semiconductor product categories: microprocessor sales annual compound growth rate of 5.9%, a 7.8% increase in NAND flash memory, a 10% increase in the optical sensor, the semiconductor market annual growth rate of 3.7%, only the compound annual growth rate of the pressure sensor can match CMOS image sensor.
Report also pointed out that in 10 to 15 years at the turn of the century, the growth of CMOS image sensor is mainly by the smartphone. But as the smartphone market saturation, the trend of growth is slowing, and the development of the embedded digital imaging system will set off a new round of growth, including for car security cameras, ADAS, machine vision, medical applications, face recognition, etc., most importantly, more and more high resolution CMOS image sensor will also be used in smart phones.
